B.A. (Digital Arts-Animation)

Introduction:

Animation is a type of an optical illusion just like a cinema. But instead of having real life characters,
animation uses characters born out of an artist’s imagination.
Also the movement of the animation character part are some what different from real life motions.
Animation is broadly classified in two types.
i) Two Dimensional animation (2D) and
ii) Three Dimensional animation (3D).

2D ANIMATION

Traditionally two dimensional animation used to be done with thousands of actual hand drawn sketches
and showing this sketches in rapidly in succession formed and animation sequences.
“Tom and Jerry”, “Simpson” are the best examples of 2D animation TV shows and the movies like
“Arabian Nights”, “Hanuman”, “My Friend Ganesha” are some of the examples of features films.
Now a days, with the help of modern computers and softwares’ like “Flash” & others softwares, it is
possible to produce 2D animation films, which saves lot of human efforts and time. But even modern
approaches to 2D animation a lot of initial sketch work and story boarding is required, which was existed
before the computers arrived. This means that good animators are required to know both the
processes.

3D ANIMATION

The advent of computers brought about a logical extension of 2D animation and that was 3D. In 3D
animation it is possible to create a three dimensional environment along with characters or objects.
This gives a lot of real life effects to animation movies, and there is more freedom for artist’s imagination
and a room to explore newer ideas.
With help of softwares like 3Ds max, Maya, Zbrush and so many game products and 3D animation
movies are produced in the market today.

Parallel Fields

Today it is possible to blend traditional cinema and modern animation effects. The result can be seen
in movies like “Harry Potter” series, “Lord of the Rings”, “The Chronicles of Narnia” which were the film
versions of some of the epic literary works.
Even in Bollywood there are movies like “Bahubali”, “Robot & Robot 2.0” has been used 3D animation
for special effects.
Mainly Sci-fi or mythological stories like “Ramayana” and “Mahabharat”, we can produce a lot of
movies based on these stories using such modern technology.
On a different note animation can also be used in engineering and medical sciences as a educational
tool like “Simulators” & “Walkthroughs”.
Animator has to begin his work by lots of drawing & sketches in initial stage of animation production
and preparing story board. This program has given a certain importance to pre-production
processes. In first phase of their learning students will gain the skill of all these initial stage.
In second part students will make the actual character based on animation with help of their own
characters like Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry etc.
In 3D animation, lot of emphasis is put on modeling the character after the initial sketch or a concept.
Texturing involves putting colors & textures on these characters, objects and surroundings. Thirdly
these characters will have to move, talk, smile and express all the human emotions. This part is done
under animation phase.

TMV’s Instigation in Animation

Keeping in a view of all the progress in the field and realizing the fact that Indian animation industry is
going to touch 869 million dollars by 2020, TMV has already started a course which can produce quality
professionals. This will provide the required skilled man power to the growing animation industry.
As we have seen it’s not sufficient to learn animation softwares only but it is also important to learn lot
of subject in fine arts like figure drawing, color theory, perspective etc. We have started three years
dedicated course to learn both animation software with fine art subjects.
Those who are in need of quick course we have started diploma programmes in 2D and 3D animation
under the ‘center for Skills development & entrepreneurship education’, too.
